Volcanoes around the world are continuing to wake up nearly all at the same time. Mt. Etna has been blowing gas rings that look exactly like glowing halos, and it is becoming increasingly active. On September 17th, 2004, Mount Asama in Japan erupted for the 4th straight day. On October 1, 2004, Mt. Bromo in Java rumbled as the residents went there to worship the "spirit of the mountain." The Piton de la Fournaise volcano on the French Island of La Reunion began to erupt on October 1, 2004. In Mexico, the "Fire Volcano" in Colima state began to burst with lava on October 6th, 2004. In the State of Washington, Mt. St. Helens has been rumbling and steaming, and on October 3, 2004, scientists warned that an eruption was imminent.

The Middle Sister and South Sister volcanoes in central Oregon have tilted slightly as the earth swells beneath their western flanks. Molten rock has been rising in recent months, lifting an area the size of Portland, Ore., (10-12 miles in diameter) by as much as a foot.
